Congratulations

Our heartfelt congratulations to our clients, the Mitakoodi and Mayi native title holders, following their native title determination earlier today in Cloncurry before Perry J with several hundred guests in an idyllic sun-filled bush hearing.

A procession of countless proud native title holders marched as a united group to the hearing location, flying banners and holding posters of ancestors, before welcome to country ceremonies. After her Honour’s judgment, native title holders and others spoke and sung passionately about the significance of the determination. All while eagles graciously circled overhead, keeping a careful watch from afar. A cool breeze blew through the hearing as the formalities ended, allowing people to breathe a sigh of relief and celebrate.

As Georgina Reid submitted to the Court on behalf of the Applicant, the first claim was lodged in 1996. Twenty-eight years later, the connection of Mitakoodi and Mayi people to their country has been formally recognised in over 25,700 square kilometres.

We are sure the Mitakoodi and Mayi ancestors would be proud. Tonight, we’re anticipating the sunset over the land and waters of Mitakoodi and Mayi country to be even more breathtaking than usual.
